Applicants can register in two days with automatic recognition
A new by-law change gives labour mobility applicants who choose to practice in Ontario a credit on their application fee.
At its June meeting, CNO’s Council approved a 25% credit to the application fee for applicants who are already registered in another Canadian province or territory and are applying to register with CNO through "automatic recognition". This allows an applicant to register in two business days by completing an application, signing an attestation form confirming good standing and good character, and paying the required fees.
The credit is a one-time amount that will be applied to a payment to CNO, including the registration fees. It is available to automatic recognition applications made after Jan. 1, 2026.
The by-law change was shared for public consultation. Those who did not support the change often felt it was unfair for applicants registered in other province or territory to receive a credit, while Ontario applicants still pay the full fee. Among those who were unsure, many said they were not clear on how the credit would work or who would qualify. Those who supported the change said the credit could enhance labour mobility, reduce costs for nurses seeking registration in multiple provinces, and make Ontario a more attractive place to practice, especially during workforce shortages.
