Allegations
It was alleged that the Member committed professional misconduct. In 2018 and 2019, the Member was charged with manslaughter and with three counts of failing to comply with bail conditions. In 2020, the Member was found guilty of two counts of failing to comply with a condition of recognizance in the Newfoundland Provincial Court. In 2021, the Member pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death in the Ontario Court of Justice. The Member failed to report the charges that led to the findings of guilt to the College of Nurses of Ontario as required.
Member’s Position
The Member did not attend the hearing and was deemed to have denied the allegations.
Discipline Committee’s Findings
A panel of the Discipline Committee of the College of Nurses of Ontario (the “Panel”) found that the Member:
- was found guilty of an offence relevant to her suitability to practise;
- contravened a term, condition or limitation on her certificate of registration;
- contravened a provision of the Nursing Act, 1991, the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991, or the regulations under either of those Acts; and
- engaged in conduct or performed an act, relevant to the practice of nursing, that, having regard to all the circumstances, would reasonably be regarded by members as disgraceful, dishonourable and unprofessional.
Discipline Committee’s Order
The Panel made an order that included:
- an oral reprimand; and
- immediate revocation of the Member’s certificate of registration.
