The following information applies to the new registration requirement for applicants. This requirement takes effect April 1, 2025.

The Transition to Practice requirement ensures that individuals who enter the nursing profession in Ontario are familiar with the competencies specific to the Canadian context of practice.

You can meet this requirement in one of the following ways:

  • show evidence of recently completing a Canadian baccalaureate degree or diploma in nursing within the past three years, including Ontario graduates
  • show evidence of registration in a Canadian jurisdiction (outside Ontario) in the same category for which you are applying to CNO
  • show evidence of recent Canadian nursing practice within the past three years, including practice as a nurse in the general class in Ontario
  • successfully complete a CNO-approved Transition to Practice course. The course will be valid for five years from completion.
  • show evidence of successfully completing the new Education Pathway program that will be offered by schools starting in Summer 2025. The education pathway program will be valid for three years from completion.

CNO will assess all information to determine if you meet the Transition to Practice requirement and advise you of next steps if necessary.
