Beginning the Application Process - Canada (Outside Ontario)

The application process for nurses educated in or already registered in another Canadian province or territory starts by creating an online application with CNO.

Once you have created an account, you can begin your application by logging in and clicking on “create a new application.”

When creating your account in the online portal, make sure your personal information is correct.

You will need to send verification forms to relevant third parties, such as educators, employers or regulatory bodies. CNO requires these documents to come directly from the third parties. Any third-party information submitted by the applicant will not be considered.

We will start assessing your application only after we receive the following:

  • a completed application, including the application fee, which is non-refundable
  • a verification of course completion and transcript you request from your nursing school (if you graduated from a nursing program in Canada but are not registered with another nurse regulator in Canada). In the case of recent nursing school graduates, this information must come directly from the nursing school in an official sealed envelope with the school’s official letterhead, logo or stamp
  • a Verification of Registration (if you are registered with another nurse regulator in Canada)

Once we receive and review your information, you will receive a message from us telling you what other information is needed to assess your application. For example, evidence to demonstrate you have met CNO’s other registration requirements.

NOTE:

  • During your application, if you answer “yes” to any question on the declaration, you will need to provide additional information with your application, including a personal statement and supporting documentation, separately. These cannot be submitted online; you will be given instructions about how to submit the documents to CNO. This information will be reviewed by CNO’s Registrar/Executive Director and may be referred to the Registration Committee, which will extend the time it takes to process your application.
  • While you can submit your proof of authorization to work (proof of citizenship, residency status or authorization to practice nursing in Ontario) at any time during the online application process, we recommend you submit this documentation to us when you create your application.
  • If your name changes, you must send us a written request for a name change. Your request must include the following:
    • your previous name
    • a copy of a legal name change document, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or change of name certificate
    • your new name spelled exactly as it appears on your legal name change document
    • your signature
    • your mailing address and phone number

You can upload these documents through your account on the online application portal.

Your application for registration is confidential. We will not share information about your application with anyone unless you give us written permission to release it to a third party, such as, an employer, spouse, agency or lawyer). To authorize this, you can either send us a written and signed letter of permission or complete the Authorization to Release Information form.

Providing false or misleading information and/or documents in support of your application for registration may result in a refusal of your application for registration or the cancellation of any certificate that may have been issued.
