CNO welcomes public inquiry into Wettlaufer case

June 27, 2017 - The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) welcomes the government’s announcement of an independent public inquiry into the circumstances of the Elizabeth Tracy Mae Wettlaufer case. We support the opportunity to find ways to prevent this from happening again.

CNO’s one and only mandate is to protect the public and we owe it to Ontarians to clearly understand how this happened, and what systemic improvements can be made so that all of us working within the health care system can work together as effectively as possible to protect and care for our loved ones.

Last week, CNO’s Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee referred Ms Wettlaufer to a discipline hearing. A hearing date is set for Tuesday, July 25, 2017. Information about the allegations and the hearing are now on the public Register, Find a Nurse.

Discipline hearings are open to the public. A hearing is an opportunity for the public to learn more about a nurse’s misconduct and regulatory history with CNO. To learn more about discipline hearings, visit www.cno.org/hearings.

We will provide more information to the public as it becomes available.
