Announcing new Nursing Data Dashboard and Registration Renewal Statistics Report

CNO is pleased to announce two new resources for information about the nursing profession in Ontario.

Introducing our new Nursing Data Dashboard, an online resource that allows you to engage directly with CNO data. We have also released a new Registration Renewal Statistics Report 2023 (formerly Registration Statistics Report). This report shares data on all nurses who renewed a certificate of registration with CNO for 2023.

This report presents demographic and employment statistics of the nurses who renewed their registrations for 2023 and compares it to data from the 2016-2022 renewal periods.

According to the 2023 Registration Renewal Statistics Report, 178,184 nurses renewed at least one certificate of registration in the General or Extended Class in 2023, which represents a year-over-year increase of 3.05%. Other highlights from the report include:

  • The number of losses, or registrants who did not renew their registration in 2023, was 9,833, almost 1,000 more than in 2022. This was offset by 15,103 gains, or registrants who renewed in 2023 who did not in the previous year, an increase of over 2,000 compared to 2022, leading to a net increase of 5270 nurses.
  • During the last three years, both RNs and RPNs have seen steady growth in the number of reported full-time and casual positions, while also experiencing a year-over-year decrease in part-time employment positions held starting in 2020.
