Next Steps: RN in the Extended Class (NP) Reinstatement

The government of Ontario is temporarily providing financial supports to cover the costs associated with General and Temporary Class registration until March 31, 2025. Information on how to request reimbursement is available through Ontario Health (Health Force).

We have received your application for registration as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class (or Nurse Practitioner)

If you haven’t already done so, you will need to send the following documents to the College:

  • Proof of your citizenship, residency status, or authorization to practice nursing in Ontario
  • You will also need to request a police criminal record check.  If you currently reside in Canada, CNO only accepts police criminal record checks from Sterling, a secure third-party criminal record check provider. Paper criminal record checks or checks from other online sources will not be accepted from applicants with Canadian addresses.

If you currently reside outside of Canada, please go to your local law enforcement and obtain a criminal history check. You may send this to CNO in one of three ways:

    By mail:

    College of Nurses of Ontario
    101 Davenport Road
    Toronto ON, M5R 3P1
    Canada

    By email: cch@cnomail.org
By fax or electronic fax: 416 928-6507
  • Your police criminal record check is valid for only six months after it is issued. Please keep this timeline in mind when you start the application process. If your police criminal record check expires while your application is in progress, you will need to request a new one. Visit our police criminal record check webpage for more information, including how to make a request.

Note: Your online criminal record check must include all of your current and former names. The College considers a criminal record check valid for only six months after it is issued. Therefore, depending on when you submit it to the College, it may expire during the application process and you will be required to submit a new one before becoming eligible for registration.

Please arrange for the appropriate organizations to send the following verification forms to the College:

To check the status of your application and to see a list of your requirements, login to Maintain Your Membership, select “View Open Applications” and select your NP application. A registration requirement will be marked as “outstanding” either because information has not been received, or because the information that has been received is still being reviewed by the College.

Throughout the application process, we will send you messages in the online portal’s message centre.

Has your contact information changed?

If your mailing address, telephone number or email address has changed, please use the “update my personal information” feature in the online portal. However, if your name has changed, you must send a letter to the College along with your official name-change document, such as a marriage certificate – in the letter, please indicate how you would like your new name to appear.

For more information, read the Reinstatement Guide.
