Highlights

Midwives can now receive orders from Nurse Practitioners (NPs). This change promotes further collaboration between nurses and midwives to enhance client safety and access to care across Ontario.

This update comes as part of changes made to the Designated Drugs and Substances Regulation under the Midwifery Act, 1991. Before this took effect on May 3, only doctors could issue orders.

There is no change to NP scope of practice and there is no regulatory change to the Nursing Act, 1991.

For more information related to the revised regulation, please visit the College of Midwives of Ontario.
