The Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute is hosting a day-long conference on practical ethics in home-based care in honour of St. Elizabeth Health Care on its 100th anniversary. It will be held Nov. 6, 2008, at the University of Toronto, and is targeted to anyone who works in home care, including nurses, physicians, personal support workers, occupational therapists, speech therapists, physiotherapists and dieticians. The Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association is holding its 15th national conference on gerontological nursing in Banff from May 27 to 30, 2009, and is looking for gerontology nurses to submit abstracts for papers or poster presentations outlining your insights into how your work in practice, education, research or administration has “made a moment matter” for older adults. Electronic Newborn Registration Service

ServiceOntario has launched an electronic birth registration service to give parents and medical professionals a faster, easier way to complete birth registration documents, either electronically or on paper, and submit them directly to the Office of the Registrar General. It is estimated the project will take until the end of 2009 to complete province-wide. Free On Line Training

The Ontario Network of Sexual Assault/DV Treatment Centres (SA/DVTC) is offering health care providers free on-line training on HIV and HIV Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) as it relates to sexual assault. At the completion of the training modules, the learner will be able to discuss the history of HIV along with the incidence rate and prevalence of HIV in Ontario; counsel and assess HIV risk in people who have experienced sexual assault; recommend HIV PEP; outline potential side effects and coping methods; and know when an HIV specialist should be consulted. Patient Safety in Pre-Hospital Care Advisory Committee

The Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) and the Emergency Medical Services Chiefs of Canada (EMSCC) is inviting interested individuals, including researchers and decision makers, to apply to become members of an emerging national advisory group on patient safety and/or pre-hospital care. Team members will be expected to contribute ideas and feedback at meetings and review and provide feedback to documents. They may be required to assist in the selection of individuals to conduct research and develop a background paper to inform the roundtable proceedings. The call is open to any health care discipline. Members, feedback needed

The Canadian Association of Medical and Surgical Nurses (CAMSN) is seeking feedback from members on the first draft of national standards for certification for medical-surgical nursing. The first draft has been developed by a group of expert medical-surgical nurses representing all regions of Canada and supported by the CAMSN and Canadian Nurses Association (CNA). Plans are to offer certification in 2010.

The Canadian Holistic Nurses Association (CHNA) is asking RNs who use one or more energy-based modalities such as therapeutic touch or guided imagery in or separately from their traditional nursing practice to complete a short survey. A summary of the results will be submitted as part of CHNA’s application to the Canadian Nurses Association for certification of holistic nurses.

Volunteers Needed


Volunteers Needed

The Kidney Health Centre, an initiative of the Kidney Foundation of Canada, is seeking volunteers at locations across the province, including Guelph, Kitchener/Waterloo, London, the GTA, Barrie, Orillia, Midland, Penetaguishene, Kingston, Belleville and Ottawa, to assist in the implementation of a health promotion program in partnership with an associate nurse. Duties will include assisting participants to complete consent and data questionnaires, taking blood pressures and blood sugars using point-of-care testing, and providing health promotion information in support of health behaviours for the prevention of chronic kidney disease. A commitment of a minimum of eight hours a month is required and volunteers must be able to travel (maximum of 80 km). Mileage is provided at $0.37/km. Volunteers must be available for an eight-hour training session, registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario, and experienced in diabetes education, nephrology nursing or primary care. Volunteers needed

McMaster University is looking for volunteers who have completed health professional training outside of Canada and who have immigrated here to work to participate in the following studies:

  1. The experiences of internationally trained health workers in the long-term and home care sectors in Canada; and
  2. The experiences of internationally educated health professionals who migrate to Canada

Participation involves a phone or in-person interview of 60 to 90 minutes. Participants will receive an honorarium of $25.

Healthy Pregnancy for Great Life Beginnings: Maternal Adversity, Vulnerability and Neurodevelopment (MAVAN)

The Women’s Health Concerns Clinic at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is looking for volunteers to take part in a large-scale prospective study on the effects of stress, anxiety and depression in pregnant women on their babies. Participation will include a number of clinic and home visits, beginning between 12- 24 weeks gestation and concluding at 36 months.
