Wettlaufer Inquiry offers opportunity to shape the future
The start of the public hearings for the Inquiry into the Safety and Security of Residents in the Long Term Care Homes System begins June 5 and serves as a reminder of tragic events that impacted the lives of many. The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) would like to, once again extend our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of Elizabeth Wettlaufer’s victims.
Our one and only mandate is to protect the public, and we owe it to Ontarians to clearly understand how this happened, and what systematic improvements can be made so that all of us working in healthcare are able to protect and care for our loved ones to the best of our ability.
Nothing can change the past, but all of us who work in healthcare can learn, change and help shape the future. We look forward to contributing to the inquiry and it is our hope that its findings will help us all better understand what went wrong and how we can prevent tragedies like this from ever happening again.
