New medical reporting requirements of unsafe drivers
The Highway Traffic Act, 1990 (HTA) has been amended to include new mandatory and discretionary reporting of potentially unsafe drivers for certain health care practitioners, including nurse practitioners (NPs).
Nurse practitioners are now required to report specific high risk medical conditions, functional impairments and visual impairments of clients 16 years of age or older. Details of the prescribed conditions NPs must report can be found in Ontario Regulation 340/94, s. 14.1 (3).
Discretionary reporting of clients who, of the opinion of the NP, appear to have a condition that may impair safe driving is also required.
Visit the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website for more information about these requirements and to access the new medical reporting form to be used for both mandatory and discretionary reporting.
