CNO responds to Wettlaufer criminal proceedings
June 1, 2017 — With Elizabeth Tracy Mae Wettlaufer’s guilty pleas today, the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) can now confirm that Ms Wettlaufer resigned her registration with the College on September 30, 2016, the same day she first informed us of her actions. Since receiving the information, the College has fully cooperated with the police.
The College can now accelerate its own ongoing investigation into Ms Wettlaufer’s professional conduct. We expect our process to be resolved in the near future. We will update this statement as more information becomes available.
We take our mandate to protect the public very seriously. We are committed to responding quickly to any information that indicates patients may be harmed by a nurse’s actions.
The College wants to once again extend its sympathies to the families and loved ones of Ms Wettlaufer’s victims. We hope that the speed of today’s court proceedings, though painful and difficult to hear, has brought some relief.
Wettlaufer pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
All publicly available information about Ms Wettlaufer, including the criminal findings of guilt against her and information about her ability to practise in Ontario, is posted on the public Register, Find a Nurse, on www.cno.org.
